Safety Concerns

Thermal Runaway

Over-heating Risk: The heating mechanism in the battery pack is designed to operate within a specific temperature range. If the heating element malfunctions or the temperature control system fails, the battery can over-heat. Over-heating can lead to a phenomenon known as thermal runaway. In a lithium-ion battery, this can cause a chain reaction where the battery's internal components start to decompose, release heat at an increasing rate, and potentially lead to a fire or explosion. For example, if the temperature sensor fails to accurately detect the battery's temperature and the heating continues unchecked, the battery cells can reach temperatures far above their safe operating limits.

Battery Swelling and Leakage

Pressure Build-up: Excessive heat can cause the battery to swell. As the temperature rises, the internal pressure of the battery increases due to the expansion of the electrolyte and the chemical reactions occurring at a faster rate. Swelling not only indicates a potential safety hazard but can also damage the device in which the battery is installed. In severe cases, the battery may leak its electrolyte. The electrolyte in 18650 lithium-ion batteries is often flammable and corrosive. If it leaks, it can cause damage to surrounding components and pose a fire and chemical burn risk.
